How peptides are tested in Australia: methods, laboratories and lab reports

Costs

What peptide testing costs in Australia

One provider publishes a per-vial price; the large labs quote per job. Here is what each figure covers.

The short version

The large analytical labs in Australia quote peptide work per job and do not publish prices. For a personal sample, Peptide Testing Australia lists its price per vial: A$575 including GST at the time of writing, with 10% off extra vials in the same order.

Testing a personal sample?

Compare the method and turnaround as well as the price. Always use a reputable testing service like peptidetesting.au.

Peptide testing for a personal sample in Australia costs A$575 per vial including GST at Peptide Testing Australia, the provider in our directory that publishes a price, with periodic discounts, 10 per cent off each extra vial in the same order and A$185 extra for a blend of peptides in one vial. The larger analytical labs that test peptides do not publish prices; they quote each job on the methods, the number of samples and the paperwork required.

This report sets out the published figures, what a lab quote is built from, the questions worth asking before you commit and the costs people tend to forget.

The published price for one vial

Peptide Testing Australia prices per vial, and each vial gets its own Certificate of Analysis. Using its standard published price, common orders work out like this:

OrderHow it is worked outTotal inc. GST
One vial, one peptideA$575A$575.00
Two vials, same orderA$575 + A$517.50 (second vial 10% off)A$1,092.50
Three vials, same orderA$575 + 2 × A$517.50A$1,610.00
One vial holding a blendA$575 + A$185 blend analysisA$760.00

The provider runs periodic discounts, so the current figure can be lower; its testing page shows the live price and order form. Turnaround is approximately 5-7 business days plus postage, and it accepts samples posted from within Australia only. Its published test covers identity (mass spectrometry) and purity (HPLC).

Why the large labs quote instead

None of the ten larger labs in our directory lists a price for peptide work. Their peptide services sit inside contract work for manufacturers, trial sponsors, researchers and regulators, where each job is scoped first. You can see it in how they ask to be contacted:

  • Chemika takes enquiries through a quote form and provides peptide testing for commercial clients only.
  • Proteomics International asks for a purchase order number with a signed quotation before work starts (Proteomics International).
  • Flinders Analytical publishes internal rates only and asks external clients to email for a quote (Flinders University).
  • ChemCentre's FAQ says its staff will be happy to discuss pricing (ChemCentre).

A quote-only lab is not necessarily cheaper or dearer than a published price. It is a different kind of service, set up for repeat business clients rather than one-off vials.

A quote-only lab is the usual route when the sample belongs to an organisation: a manufacturer releasing a batch, a sponsor running a clinical trial, a researcher characterising a new peptide or an agency testing seized material. Those clients often need validated methods, regulatory paperwork and repeat testing over months, which is the work the larger labs in our directory describe.

What a lab quote is built from

  • Sample receipt and logging. Each sample is registered and tracked. ISO/IEC 17025, the standard most Australian testing labs are accredited to, covers the handling of test items (NATA).
  • Method set-up. If a lab has not tested a particular peptide before, it may need to develop or adapt a method. Chemika, for one, lists method development and validation among its services (Chemika).
  • Identity. A mass spectrometry run to confirm the peptide's mass.
  • Purity. An HPLC run to separate and measure the main peak and any impurities.
  • Extra peptides. A blend needs each peptide identified and separated, which is why a blend attracts an extra charge on a published price list too.
  • Review and report. Results are checked, authorised and written up. Accredited labs must include the information their standard requires (NATA).

Questions to ask when you request a quote

AskWhy it matters
Will you accept a sample from me?Many industry labs need a company, a purchase order or a regulated product.
Which methods are included?Identity only, purity only, or both. A purity figure without identity can describe the wrong peptide.
Is set-up charged per job or per sample? It changes the cost of testing one vial compared with several.
Is the test on your accreditation scope? The NATA endorsement can only appear on reports of in-scope testing.
Does the price include GST and return of results?Avoids surprises on the invoice.
What turnaround do you quote?Ask whether faster turnaround changes the price.

Costs people forget

  • Postage. Tracked post costs extra, and Australia Post notes that its network is not temperature controlled, so items can be exposed to extreme heat or cold in transit (Australia Post Prohibited and Restricted Items guide).
  • More than one vial. Comparing two products, or two vials from the same batch, doubles the work, although a per-vial discount can soften it.
  • A second test. A surprising result sometimes needs a further test, such as a quantitative assay or a microbiology test that the first job did not include.
  • Time. Turnaround plus postage can mean a week or two between deciding to test and reading the report.

What one personal-sample test covers

It helps to line the price up against what the test reports. Based on what Peptide Testing Australia publishes about its test, a standard order covers the following:

ItemIncluded?Notes
Identity of the peptideYesBy mass spectrometry
PurityYesBy HPLC, reported as a percentage
Certificate of AnalysisYesOne per vial, in plain English
Blend of peptides in one vialExtra A$185Each peptide has to be separated and identified
Amount of peptide per vialNot listedNeeds a quantitative method; ask before ordering
Sterility or endotoxinNot listedSeparate microbiology tests
Medical or dosing adviceNoThe provider does not give medical advice

The same exercise works for a quote from a larger lab: ask it to list each method and deliverable, then compare line by line rather than on the total alone.

What the price does not buy

A test tells you what was in the sample. It does not provide medical advice, approve a product or change its legal status: the TGA says "research use only" labels do not change whether a product is regulated as a therapeutic good (TGA). It also does not cover tests that were not run. Sterility and endotoxin are separate methods, and identity and purity results do not speak to them.

Questions

Q.01How much does it cost to test a peptide in Australia?

Peptide Testing Australia lists A$575 per vial including GST, with periodic discounts. The larger analytical labs quote per job and do not publish prices.

Q.02Is it cheaper to test several vials at once?

At Peptide Testing Australia, each extra vial in the same order is 10% off, so two vials come to A$1,092.50 at the standard price. For quote-only labs, ask whether set-up is charged per job or per sample.

Q.03Why don't large labs publish peptide testing prices?

Their peptide work is contract work for manufacturers, sponsors and researchers, scoped job by job. They ask for an enquiry or a purchase order instead.

Q.04Does a blend cost more to test?

Yes. Peptide Testing Australia counts a blend in one vial as one vial plus A$185, because each peptide in the vial has to be identified and separated.
